National League Frequency Rankings by Franchise, 1901-68

Top Line Equals 1st Place | Circle Size Shows Frequencies of Final Standings Position

This interactive visualization was created using d3 and jQuery and was inspired by a visualization from skyrill.com. The circles on the chart depict the number of times a franchise finished in a given position, in this case from 1st place to 10th place (although for most years there were only eight teams). The larger the circle, the more seasons ending in that position, with 1st place at the top of the chart. A quick scan tells us that the Phillies spent many seasons at the bottom of the league in 8th place, while the Giants had the highest proportion of top three finishes.

Hovering over a circle highlights all circles for that team, and additionally highlights the franchise name in the legend.
