As a reminder, the teams are ranked from #20 through #1 based on aggregate WAR162. For the 1980s (1980-1989), a total of 280 team-seasons were eligible, so the top 20 teams are a rather exclusive group &#8211; the top 7% for the decade. We&#8217;ll summarize each team, including portions of the team&#8217;s dashboard, and explain how they attained their ranking. The offense had modest power and speed by league standards, but they did manage to rank 2nd in BA and OBP, and 3rd in OPS. Catcher <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sciosmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Mike Scioscia<\/a> had a fine season, batting .296 with a .407 OBP and stellar defense. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=marshmi01,marshmi02&amp;search=Mike+Marshall&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Mike Marshall<\/a> added 238 home runs and 95 RBI while batting .293. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hershor01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Orel Hershiser<\/a> (19-3, 2.03ERA) and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valenfe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Fernando Valenzuela<\/a> (17-10, 2.45 ERA) topped the pitching staff, with solid support from 14-game winners <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/welchbo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Bob Welch<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reussje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Jerry Reuss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8aa9af06d91ecf4bcfcf619ad7f3059a\" style=\"color:#2a35ff\">#14: 1985 New York Mets, 49.4 WAR162<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1985 Mets won 98 games but fell three games short of the Cardinals for the NL East title. Carter batted .281 with 32 home runs and 100 RBI. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernake01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Keith Hernandez<\/a> won a Gold Glove at first base while batting .309 with 91 RBI, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strawda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Darryl Strawberry<\/a> homered 29 times with 79 RBI in just 111 games. On the mound, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goodedw01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Dwight Gooden<\/a> assembled one of the best seasons ever by a pitcher, winning the  <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngcy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Cy Young<\/a> with a 24-4 record and 1.53 ERA. Gooden received strong support from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darliro01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Ron Darling<\/a> (16-6, 2.90 ERA) and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fernasi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Sid Fernandez<\/a>, who topped the NL in strikeout rate while yielding the fewest hits per 9 innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cc80dfe3ef3500baa3188cbf8c9edd72\" style=\"color:#2a35ff\">#13: 1980 Baltimore Orioles, 49.5 WAR162<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1980 Orioles claimed 100 wins but fell three games behind the Yankees in the AL East, a season after playing in the World Series.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-10-1024x265.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6432\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3.86428982173663;width:714px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-10-1024x265.png 1024w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-10-300x78.png 300w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-10-768x199.png 768w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-10.png 1426w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Orioles ranked 5th in runs with 805, just 25 behind the league-leading Tigers, and placed 4th with 156 home runs. In most other offensive categories, they ranked between 4th and 6th in the 14-team American League. Third Baseman <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/decindo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Doug DeCinces<\/a> added 16 homers to go with excellent defense, and catcher <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dempsri01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Rick Dempsey<\/a> had a solid overall season. Lefty <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgresc01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Scott McGregor<\/a> won 20 games, while veteran righty <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stonest01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=visual-baseball.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-06-05_br\">Steve Stone<\/a> went 25-7 to claim the AL Cy Young Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ba211837491f13b8fcb400b0f1178a68\" style=\"color:#2a35ff\">#12: 1980 New York Yankees, 49.6 WAR162<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1980 Yankees finished three games ahead of the Orioles to claim the AL East, but were swept by the Royals in three games in the ALCS.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"269\" src=\"https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-12-1024x269.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6434\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3.806826228579521;width:684px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-12-1024x269.png 1024w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-12-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-12-768x202.png 768w, https:\/\/visual-baseball.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-12.png 1406w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Yankees boasted a potent offense, scoring 820 runs (10 behind the Tigers), and slugging 189 home runs to rank second in both categories. The New Yorkers ranked 3rd in OPS and 4th in OBP for the season. Pitching was again a strength for the Yankees, with the 2nd-best performance in both ERA and WHIP.
