MLB Franchise Radial Networks 1901-2025

MLB franchise radial networks display all of the players within the history of a baseball franchise. Each radian in the graph represents a season based on the first year a player was on the team roster. Player nodes are sized by the number of seasons, and connections link players with one or more shared seasons. Use your mouse to zoom in or out, or use the zoom button. Clicking on a specific player node will highlight all first-degree connections for that individual.

Graph statistics will appear in the information pane when an individual player is selected:

Size refers to the number of seasons spent on that team’s roster – this could indicate a full or partial season. The Degree metric is a measure of how many players the selected player is connected to by virtue of being on the team roster for one or more seasons.

Graph statistics start with Eccentricity. Eccentricity is a measure of how many steps are required to connect to every other player in the network. Closeness Centrality and Harmonic Closeness Centrality are measures of how important a player is in the network. A score closer to 1 indicates an influential player typically connected to many others. Betweenness Centrality measures the importance of an individual player in traversing the network to connect to other players. Players with few connections will have scores near 0.

These graphs were created with Gephi and customized for the web with sigma.js, and are best viewed on a tablet, laptop, or large monitor. They are not very useful on a cellphone screen – there is too much detail for a small screen.
